For versabond thinset the recommended trowel size for a tile where the longest side of tile is less than 8 use 1 4 x 1 4 x 1 4 6 x 6 x 6 mm square notch.
Trowel notch recommendations are as follows.
A 3 8 x 3 8 trowel will leave a 3 16 bed of thinset beneath the tile.
Tile trowels come in many shapes and sizes generally starting out from a 3 16 v notch up to the 1 2 square notch.
